Avoiding someone will only have a positive outcome if you never, ever have to see them again.   You can choose your friends.  You can’t always choose who you work with.  Learning to work with difficult people is a skill we all need.

If you have to work with someone you find difficult, it’s time to ask even more questions than usual.  Until you know what the person wants, you’ll never be able to get it right.

Ask open questions (eg. “how can we get this right?”), listen very closely, paraphrase their words, ask clarifying questions, listen even harder and repeat.

Only when you understand their wants can you work on a solution.

I’ve learnt to see difficult people as an opportunity to hone my communication skills.  Work with them, not around them.
